August 11, 2026, came and went for a lot of Magento stores.
Nothing broke that day. Checkout still worked. Orders still shipped. Adobe Commerce and Magento Open Source versions 2.4.5 and 2.4.6 simply stopped receiving security patches — and Magento Open Source has no extended support tier at all, unlike its paid Adobe Commerce counterpart. Stores keep trading right up until a published vulnerability turns an unpatched cart into a PCI liability.
That deadline is pushing a wave of enterprise brands toward Shopify Plus, working through the transition with certified Shopify Plus Partner agencies rather than attempting it in-house. Most of the planning conversation focuses on the part everyone already knows to worry about: preserving search rankings during the switch. The redirect map, the 301s, the metadata migration. What gets less attention is that the search landscape those redirects are protecting has already changed underneath the project.
The Old Definition of “SEO-Safe” Is Incomplete
Ranking migration used to mean one job: map every indexed URL, redirect it correctly, keep Google happy. That’s still necessary. It’s no longer sufficient.
AI Overviews now show for more than 48% of Google search queries, up from roughly 6.5% a year earlier — a 58% jump in a single year. When an AI Overview answers a query directly, it can cut click-throughs to the pages ranked below it by over a third. A perfectly redirected product page can rank exactly where it used to and still see less traffic, because fewer people are clicking through past the summary.
For a brand mid-migration, that’s a second variable competing with the first. Preserving rank position doesn’t automatically preserve visibility anymore.
Generative Engines Read Differently Than Search Engines Do
Google’s AI Overviews are one part of the shift. ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Gemini answering product and brand questions directly are the other.
These systems don’t crawl a page the way a search index does — they extract. Research on LLM citation patterns found that 44% of citations in AI-generated answers come from the first 30% of a page’s content. The model reads the opening claims, the schema markup, the structured data, and largely stops caring about the rest.
That has a direct, practical consequence for a Magento-to-Shopify migration. Content formatted with clear headings, bullet points, and tables is 28 to 40% more likely to get cited by these systems than a wall of unstructured paragraph text. A legacy Magento product description built for a 2018-era Google crawler — long, unstructured, keyword-stuffed near the top — is close to invisible to a generative engine reading the same way.
Rebuilding that content during a platform migration isn’t optional polish. It’s the difference between showing up in an AI-generated answer and not existing in it at all.
What This Changes About the Migration Checklist
A pre-2026 replatform brief covered three things: preserve rankings, migrate data, don’t break checkout. The 2026 version needs a fourth column that most agencies still treat as an SEO afterthought rather than a build requirement.
| Migration Task | Traditional Focus | AI-Search Focus |
|---|---|---|
| URL migration | 301 redirects, avoid 404s | Same, plus schema and structured data on every migrated page |
| Product content | Match old copy length | Rewrite for extractability — headings, bullets, direct answers up top |
| Category pages | Preserve keyword targeting | Add FAQ blocks and comparison tables generative engines can lift |
| Reporting | Rank tracking, organic traffic | Rank tracking, plus AI citation and referral tracking |
Brands cited inside an AI-generated answer see 38% higher click-through on whatever traffic does still arrive — the visibility that survives the click-through drop converts better than average. That’s the incentive to do the rebuild properly rather than lift-and-shift the old content into a new theme.
Where This Fits Inside the Platform Decision
None of this is a reason to pick Shopify Plus over Adobe Commerce on its own — both platforms can be structured or left unstructured. It’s a reason to treat the replatform as the moment to fix it, since the content has to be touched anyway.
This is also where the practical scope of a migration project has quietly expanded. Technical SEO, generative engine optimisation, and answer engine optimisation used to sit in a separate retainer, done after launch if there was budget left. Agencies handling enterprise migrations are increasingly folding that work into the migration itself, because retrofitting AI-search structure onto a site six months after launch means doing the content work twice.
The Deadline Forces the Decision. The Rebuild Decides the Outcome
August 11 didn’t change what’s possible on Shopify Plus versus Magento. It forced a timeline on brands who were going to need to rebuild their content structure eventually, regardless of platform.
The brands treating this as “migrate the data, keep the rankings” will hit that goal and still watch AI-driven traffic route around them. The brands treating it as “rebuild for how both humans and AI systems now read a product page” get the platform switch and the visibility fix in the same project — instead of paying for the second one twice.
