6:15 PM IST. A trading desk in Mumbai watches the USD/INR order book thicken. Nobody flagged it manually — a spread-compression alert fired first, seconds before the London-New York overlap opened.
That’s the shift happening in Indian forex trading right now. The session schedule hasn’t changed. The tools reading it have.
Algorithmic systems now execute over 70% of spot forex turnover globally, based on Bank for International Settlements data cited in recent industry reporting. The “session” a retail trader sees on a chart increasingly reflects machine-driven liquidity, not human desks alone.
Two Clocks, Two Rulebooks
Before anything else: know which market you’re actually in.
- NSE/BSE currency futures (USD/INR, EUR/INR, GBP/INR, JPY/INR, plus EUR/USD, GBP/USD and USD/JPY as futures-only cross pairs) trade 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM IST on Indian exchanges, under SEBI oversight.
- Global spot forex and CFDs run 24 hours a day through the Sydney-Tokyo-London-New York cycle, mostly via brokers based outside India.
These aren’t two versions of the same market. They sit under completely different legal frameworks — and that distinction matters more than most guides admit.
The Legal Divide Most Forex Guides Ignore
RBI and FEMA rules draw a hard boundary here. Indian residents cannot legally fund an offshore forex or CFD trading account using the Liberalised Remittance Scheme (LRS). RBI has stated this directly, more than once: LRS excludes margin trading and speculative forex trading abroad.
A few things follow from that:
- CFDs are illegal for Indian residents regardless of which currency pair sits underneath them, because Indian exchanges don’t offer CFDs at all.
- Wiring money to an overseas broker for forex margin trading violates FEMA, even if the broker is well-regulated in its home country.
- RBI maintains a public Alert List of unauthorized platforms and updates it regularly — banks increasingly block remittances that look like they’re funding offshore trading.
- The only fully compliant path for Indian residents is trading the seven exchange-listed pairs above through a SEBI-registered broker on NSE or BSE.
This isn’t a footnote. If you’re reading up on the forex trading time in India to plan session-based entries, check first which side of that legal line the instrument you’re trading falls on.
Session Basics, With What AI Actually Does in Each
| Session | IST Open | IST Close | Spread Behavior | Dominant Pairs | Where AI Fits |
| Sydney | 22:30 | 07:30 | Widest | AUD/USD, NZD/USD | Mean-reversion, range filters |
| Tokyo | 05:30 | 14:30 | Moderate | USD/JPY, AUD/JPY | SVM range detection |
| London | 13:30 | 22:30 | Tight | EUR/USD, GBP/USD | NLP sentiment, breakout confirmation |
| New York (overlap) | 18:30 | 22:30 | Tightest | EUR/USD, USD/CAD | Order-book imbalance, dynamic sizing |
IST doesn’t shift for daylight saving. The US and UK do. So every one of these windows moves by about an hour for part of the year — a detail that trips up traders who memorize one fixed table and never revisit it.
Asian Hours: Small Ranges, Real Signal
Tokyo runs from 5:30 AM to 2:30 PM IST. USD/JPY leads this window, driven by Japanese institutional flow and Bank of Japan positioning.
EUR/USD usually just grinds. A 20-30 pip band for hours — wide enough to stop out a bad entry, too narrow to reward a directional bet.
SVM-based range filters and mean-reversion models earn their keep exactly here. They flag genuine compression versus a coiling breakout, a call human traders get wrong when the session drags. Spreads widen too: EUR/USD runs 0.8-1 pip in London but stretches past 2 pips around 8:00 AM IST. Spread-compression tracking has become a standard input on platforms built for this window.
London Open: Sentiment Models Under Real Load
London opens at 1:30 PM IST. Volume surges, spreads compress, and the first 90 minutes decide whether the overnight Asian range breaks or holds.
London alone handles roughly 38% of average daily global forex turnover, per the BIS 2022 Triennial Central Bank Survey.
Institutional desks run LLM-based sentiment engines here — scanning ECB statements, German CPI prints, UK employment data as headlines break, and converting text into a directional read in under a second. Retail platforms have built lighter versions of the same idea into their charting tools.
On the domestic side, Indian retail traders are running the equivalent logic through very different pipes. Zerodha’s Kite Connect and Dhan’s trading APIs let traders pipe Python execution scripts straight into NSE order flow. Tradetron lets non-coders deploy strategies built by others through the same broker rails. None of that touches global CFD trading — it’s strictly for the NSE/BSE side of the two-clock split above.
The Evening Overlap: Highest Stakes, Least Room for Error
New York opens at 6:30 PM IST and overlaps with London until 10:30 PM IST — the busiest four hours of the day by every volume metric that matters. NFP, CPI, FOMC decisions cluster in the first 90 minutes. A surprise print can move EUR/USD or GBP/USD 80-150 pips in minutes.
Order-book imbalance and dynamic ATR (average true range) tracking show why this window rewards automation. Liquidity that looks stable at 6:29 PM can thin out within seconds of a headline. Models watching imbalance in real time cut exposure before a manual stop-loss would even fire.
The same speed cuts both ways. A position sized for Asian-session calm and left untouched through an NFP surprise is exactly what automated risk controls exist to prevent. Global AI trading platform spend is projected to climb from roughly $16.2 billion in 2026 to $33.5 billion by 2030 — and risk management, not just signal generation, is now a leading category driving that growth.
What SEBI’s 2026 Framework Actually Requires
SEBI’s retail algo framework became mandatory on April 1, 2026. It only applies to trading on Indian exchanges — but for anyone running scripts through Kite Connect, Dhan, or similar APIs, the details matter:
- The 10 orders-per-second threshold. Stay under 10 orders per second per exchange through your API, and you don’t need formal algo registration. Cross it, and your strategy needs an exchange-issued Algo-ID.
- White Box vs. Black Box. Run your own transparent logic for personal use (and immediate family), and you’re a regular API user. Sell a strategy where the logic stays hidden, and the provider needs a SEBI Research Analyst license plus broker empanelment.
- Static IP, OAuth, 2FA. Every API session now requires a whitelisted static IP, OAuth-only authentication, and two-factor login. Sessions log out automatically before each trading day.
- Broker accountability. Brokers now own the compliance chain for every algo running through their platform, including due diligence on third-party providers.
Most retail traders running simple session-timing scripts fall under the 10 OPS threshold and never touch formal registration. The operational friction — static IPs, daily re-logins, 2FA — is the real day-to-day cost, not the paperwork.
What Changed on the Cost Side
Two Budget 2026 changes reshape the math for anyone trading NSE/BSE derivatives:
- STT on futures rose from 0.02% to 0.05%, effective April 1, 2026. Options STT moved to 0.15% across premium and exercise. Break-even levels widened for scalping and high-frequency strategies.
- The 50:50 cash-collateral rule now requires at least half of F&O margin in cash or cash equivalents, also from April 1, 2026 — tightening the leverage traders could previously stretch using pledged securities.
Both changes push in the same direction: manual scalping got more expensive, and disciplined, session-aware automation got relatively more attractive.
The Actual Takeaway
Match the tool to the session, not the hype to the moment. Range filters suit Tokyo’s yen pairs. Breakout confirmation earns its place at the London open. Order-book imbalance and dynamic sizing matter most in the evening overlap.
None of it replaces knowing why the London open outweighs 3 AM IST. It just does the pattern-spotting faster — and on the domestic side, it does it inside a legal framework that’s gotten a lot more specific since April 2026. On the offshore side, the legal framework hasn’t loosened at all.
