Teens Are Using AI. Schools Still Haven’t Taught Them How to Stay Safe.

Every major AI lab ships a model with a safety card, a red-teaming report, and a usage policy nobody reads. Schools got none of that. There’s no changelog. No patch notes. No onboarding flow for the people who actually live with this technology every day. And the people absorbing that gap hardest are 13-year-olds.

A new survey from Common Sense Media’s Youth AI Safety Institute puts a number on it. Just 30% of teens say a teacher has ever talked to their class about using AI safely. That’s not a small gap. That’s a product shipped to an entire user base with the safety briefing skipped entirely.

The release-cycle mismatch

Think of it the way a product team would. Generative AI reached classrooms faster than any prior education technology — faster than 1:1 laptops, faster than smartboards, faster than the internet itself moved from novelty to infrastructure. Curriculum development runs on a slower clock: pilot, review board, state alignment, rollout. That cycle takes years. The technology iterates in weeks.

The mismatch shows up in how the conversation gets framed. Michael Robb, head of research at Common Sense, told CNN that AI conversations in schools have gotten bogged down in one narrow question — are you cheating with it or not — while everything else about how teens actually encounter AI content goes undiscussed. Meanwhile, 70% of teens already use AI for homework. Most of them do it without any framework for evaluating what the tool hands back.

That’s the part that should worry anyone who builds or writes about AI for a living. Usage is outpacing risk literacy, and it’s outpacing it fastest in the population least equipped to close that gap alone.

It’s not just a cheating problem

The more urgent blind spot is synthetic media, not academic integrity. Nude deepfakes — AI-generated images that superimpose a real person into explicit content — have become common enough among teens that therapists now treat the conversation as standard adolescent-development prep, not an edge case. That mirrors what forensics researchers are finding at the adult end of the same problem: even the expert who spent twenty-five years building deepfake detection tools now says detection alone can’t keep up with how fast generation has improved. If the world’s leading detector can’t reliably tell real from fake anymore, a 13-year-old evaluating a friend’s phone screen has no chance without some baseline literacy first.

Justine Carino, a psychotherapist who works with young people, recommends parents open the conversation by third or fourth grade if kids already discuss sexualized content, and no later than fifth grade otherwise. That’s earlier than most parents assume necessary — precisely because waiting removes the window for prevention.

Strange inversion, for a technology sold on productivity gains: the most consequential AI safety conversation in American households right now isn’t about plagiarism or job displacement. It’s about nonconsensual synthetic imagery, and it’s happening almost entirely outside school walls.

The same evaluation gap shows up outside school, too. Reviewers who test unmoderated AI chat platforms flag the exact same issue from the other direction: products built with no meaningful age checks or content guardrails end up in the hands of exactly the users least prepared to assess what they’re seeing.

Why “just ban it” doesn’t work

Some districts lean on restriction instead of instruction. It doesn’t hold. The pressure driving teen AI use — a documented sense of needing to be “exceptional” across grades, honors tracks, and extracurriculars — doesn’t disappear when a school blocks a chatbot at the network level. It just moves the usage off the record. A ban without a conversation produces kids who hide their AI use, not kids who understand it. That’s the opposite of the outcome schools presumably want.

The parent-side patch

Curriculum isn’t catching up anytime soon. Until it does, the safety layer runs on parents by default — not because that’s the ideal design, but because it’s the only layer currently deployed. Researchers and clinicians converge on a few concrete moves: talk about AI-generated content specifically, not “AI” in the abstract. Treat the deepfake conversation as a when, not an if. Ask what your kid would do if a friend, not a stranger, made or shared one — because that’s the far more common scenario than the stranger-danger framing most safety materials default to.
