Somewhere between the smartwatch and the smart speaker, a stranger category of hardware has been quietly assembling itself: gadgets that don’t wait for you to open an app. They just watch. They just listen. And they’ve decided that’s a feature, not a threat.
Meta is now moving millions of units of its EssilorLuxottica-made AI glasses, complete with built-in cameras and microphones. Samsung has smart glasses of its own arriving later this year. Amazon has a wristband called the Bee Pioneer — built by the startup Bee before Amazon agreed to acquire the company — that records conversations and quietly suggests who you should follow up with afterward. Plaud makes a clip-on recorder, the Notepin S, small enough to forget you’re wearing it — which is precisely the point, and precisely the problem.
Three Devices, One Office, Zero Privacy
A CNN reporter spent months wearing all three: the Ray-Ban glasses, the Bee Pioneer, and the Notepin S — through office days, work trips, a vacation in Lisbon, and social gatherings. The companies supplied the hardware, which is worth noting before anyone treats this as a neutral trial run.
The appeal, when it showed up, was narrow and situational. In Lisbon, the glasses identified the Jerónimos Monastery from a photo and returned context almost instantly, no phone required. At a networking event, the Bee Pioneer recorded conversations hands-free and nudged the wearer toward a useful follow-up contact afterward.
That’s the whole pitch, really: friction removal. No pulling out a phone, no typing a search query, no scrambling for a business card after the fact. It’s a real convenience. It’s also a genuinely small one, measured against what it costs the people standing nearby who didn’t sign up for any of it.
The Part the Marketing Skips
Here’s the angle worth sitting with: every one of these devices solves a wearer’s problem while creating a bystander’s problem, and the industry has settled on the same fix for both — a blinking light.
A blinking light assumes the bystander is looking for it, knows what it means, and has the standing to object. In a crowded office or a packed conference hall, that’s a lot of assumptions stacked on one small LED. Consent-by-indicator-light is the seatbelt-light approach to privacy: technically present, easy to ignore, and only useful to people already primed to notice it.
Meta has also had to start pulling down videos from Instagram — a detail that undercuts the “it’s just for you” framing these devices lean on. If footage captured passively during someone’s day ends up surfaced publicly, the device isn’t just a personal assistant. It’s a distribution pipeline with a delay.
There’s also a legal gap sitting underneath all of this that the blinking light doesn’t touch. A dozen U.S. states still run all-party consent rules for recorded conversations, written decades before anyone imagined a stranger’s wristband doing the recording instead of a phone on the table. A law built around two people deciding to tape a call doesn’t map cleanly onto a device that’s always within earshot of whoever walks by.
Why This Is a Bigger Bet Than It Looks
The “post-smartphone” framing tech companies are using isn’t marketing fluff — it’s a real strategic wager. Phones put the interface in your hand, which means you control when the device is engaged. Glasses and wristbands put the interface on your body, ambient and always-available, which shifts control toward whoever’s wearing it and away from everyone else in the room. That’s not an incremental UX improvement. It’s a different default setting for how much of daily life gets treated as recordable input.
For companies building AI products, that shift matters enormously. Every photo the glasses take, every conversation the wristband logs, is training and product data that a phone sitting in someone’s pocket, unopened, never generates. The convenience argument is real, but it’s also the argument that gets the sensor closest to the person and the data flowing most continuously — which is exactly why the industry is racing here regardless of whether the demand is fully there yet.
It’s the same trust question we’ve already been forced to answer with AI companions that store years of deeply personal conversation to feel more human — except a wearable doesn’t ask permission to start listening. It just does, to whoever happens to be nearby.
The Actual Question
The honest version of “are we ready for this” isn’t about whether the tech works — it clearly does, well enough to be useful in a museum square or a networking mixer. The real question is whether “there’s a light for that” creates an adequate social contract when people can turn everyday spaces into recording zones with someone else’s hardware—without a register, meaningful notice beyond a blink, or any recourse beyond hoping the wearer politely asks first.
Until that gets an answer better than an LED, the most interesting thing about these devices isn’t what they can see or hear. It’s how much they’re quietly asking bystanders to just go along with.
